Overseas assets and subsidiaries
Oil India's overseas portfolio has been built over two decades and now spans seven countries: Russia, Venezuela, Nigeria, Mozambique, Libya, Gabon and Bangladesh. At its widest the company described 17 blocks across ten countries, including Yemen, the United States and Myanmar, so the list has been pruned as well as extended over the years.[1] [3]
Venezuela is the oldest producing position. Oil India holds a 3.5 per cent participating interest in the Carabobo block in the Orinoco Heavy Oil Belt, one of the largest heavy oil regions in the world. As of 31 March 2026, 76 wells had been drilled in the block, and the company's share of production from it during 2025-26 was 0.0139 million tonnes. Operations had been constrained by United States sanctions on Venezuela and its state oil company, and the company now expects the easing of restrictions to open new opportunities, possibly with a national oil company as partner.[6]
Russia is the largest investment. Oil India, ONGC Videsh and Bharat Petro Resources together acquired a 23.9 per cent stake in JSC Vankorneft and a 29.9 per cent stake in LLC Taas-Yuryakh from Rosneft. The company had recovered over 91 per cent of its 1 billion dollar investment by September 2025 and expected full recovery in 2026-27, but about 300 million dollars of dividend income was stuck in Russia because of sanctions.[4] [6]
Mozambique is the largest future project. The Area 1 offshore liquefied natural gas project, operated by TotalEnergies, has a capacity of 13.12 million tonnes a year, and a consortium of Indian state companies holds 30 per cent of it, with ONGC Videsh at 16 per cent, Bharat Petro Resources at 10 per cent and Oil India at 4 per cent. The project was under force majeure from 2021 after an attack by Islamic State militants, the force majeure was withdrawn in November 2025, and production is expected to start in late 2028 or early 2029.[4] [6]
The overseas companies that hold these assets are Oil India International Limited, Oil India International BV, Oil India Sweden AB, Oil India (USA) Inc and an entity in Cyprus. The company has said it is looking for further acquisitions in oil and gas and in critical minerals, has submitted bids for some opportunities and is waiting on results.[1] [3] [8]
