Early life and family
Peyush Bansal was born on 26 April 1985 in Delhi, into the Bansal family of Bal Kishan Bansal and Kiran Bansal.[1] He describes his background as a business family rather than an industrial one, and says he grew up in a household where working for a salary was treated as the safe and respectable path, which is what made his repeated career changes so hard to explain to relatives.[4]
The family home in south Delhi, in Greater Kailash, becomes part of the story of the company. Valyoo Technologies was registered from that address, and SearchMyCampus was run from its basement, so the first two years of his working life happened inside his parents' house with their electricity and their patience.[3] He has said his parents were mostly supportive even when they could not see the logic of what he was doing, and that the occasional taunt from relatives about the money he could have earned at Microsoft was part of the price.[4]
He is married to Nidhi Mittal, who has worked as a media professional and as the founder of a content marketing agency and serves as the chairperson of an eyewear brand.[7] The couple have a son.[7] Compared with several of the other investors on Shark Tank India, whose family arrangements are covered in detail by the entertainment press, Bansal's household is discussed in public only in the most general terms, and he does not use his family as part of the company's marketing.
Education
Bansal studied engineering at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, after school in Delhi.[3] He graduated, joined Microsoft in the United States, and worked on the Office product for close to a year before deciding that the work was not the kind of problem he wanted to spend his life on.[3][4] His explanation is unusually frank: Microsoft was a company built around consumer obsession and the revolution in personal computing had already happened, so making already satisfied users of a word processor a little happier did not drive him.[4]
The decision to quit shocked his parents and friends, and by the end of 2007 he was back in India.[4] He has described the years that followed as his real education. He learned how to build a sales business from the SearchMyCampus years, where he sold marketing services to colleges and charged them per enquiry, and he learned what it means to break a promise to a customer from Flyrr, where suppliers in the United States shipped late and there was nothing he could do about it.[3][4]
When he went looking for venture capital in 2011 he was, by his own account, completely unprepared. He had no idea how to pitch, his first presentations were weak on numbers, and the management team was three people in a rented room. What he did have was an honest answer to the question every investor asks: asked what the company's biggest weakness was, he said it was that the founders had no idea how to raise money.[4] That answer, he believes, is what persuaded IDG Ventures India to write the first cheque.[4]
Business career and companies
Bansal's career before Lenskart is a sequence of false starts, and he tells it that way himself. He describes his own history as looking like attention deficit disorder: a classifieds site that made money but bored him, an American eyewear website that worked commercially and failed on operations, and then an Indian eyewear business that finally fitted.[4]
Valyoo Technologies was the vehicle for all of it. Registered in 2008 and renamed Lenskart Solutions in 2015, it carried SearchMyCampus, Flyrr, Lenskart, Watchkart, Bagskart and Jewelskart at various points, and the pattern of launching several businesses and then closing all but one is the thing he says he would do differently.[2][3] The company today is vertically integrated: it designs frames, makes lenses at its own facility, distributes them itself and sells them through its own stores and website, which is the opposite of the licensed retail model that most Indian eyewear chains use.[2]
Alongside running the company he has become one of the more visible angel investors in Indian consumer startups, mostly through his television role rather than through an institutional fund.[1] The companies he has backed on screen range from a maker of a low cost tractor to food and apparel brands, and the show has made him a television personality as much as a businessman, which is unusual for the chief executive of a company preparing to list.[1][9]
Lenskart
Lenskart.com went live in November 2010, selling contact lenses first, then eyeglasses in February 2011 and sunglasses a month later.[2][4] The market it entered was almost entirely unorganised: independent opticians set their own prices, the customer had no way to compare them, and there was no national brand apart from Titan Eye Plus, which the Tata group had started in 2007.[2][3] Bansal's insight, which he repeated for years to investors who asked who would buy spectacles online, was that eyewear is a purchase people make reluctantly and rarely, and that a trusted national brand with standard prices could take the whole market.[3]
Two early decisions shaped the company. The first was a fourteen day no questions asked returns policy, later extended to a full year, which was unusual enough in 2011 to be a marketing argument in itself.[3] The second was a call centre dedicated to complaints rather than to sales, at a time when online shopping in India was still small enough that the domestic industry treated after sales service as an afterthought.[3] Both were designed to answer the objection that a customer could not try the product before buying it, and together they let the company scale.
The physical stores came later and changed the arithmetic. Lenskart opened its own outlets and franchised a much larger number, and by the middle of the 2020s it was running more than two thousand stores, most of them small format shops in Indian cities and towns.[2] It also moved backwards into manufacturing, opening a large plant at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan with a stated capacity of 50 million units a year, which reduced its dependence on imported frames and lens blanks.[2] The store, the website and the factory now feed the same stock, and the company's pitch to investors rests on that integration.[2]
International expansion followed the same logic more slowly. Lenskart bought a majority stake in Owndays, the Japanese eyewear chain, in June 2022 in a cash and stock deal that valued Owndays at around 400 million dollars and created a combined business with annual revenue of about 650 million dollars, of which Owndays contributed about 250 million.[2] In 2025 it took an 80 per cent stake in the Spanish brand Meller for more than 40 million euros.[2] It also sells in Singapore, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. The company's own brands, including John Jacobs, launched in 2017, carry a large share of the frame business, and Katrina Kaif was signed as its first brand ambassador in October 2017, followed by Bhuvan Bam as its first male ambassador in March 2019.[2]
Turning Flyrr into Lenskart
The most useful business Bansal ever ran was one he killed. Flyrr.com, launched in 2009, sold spectacles, sunglasses and contact lenses to American customers from an office in India.[4] It grew quickly, reaching around 100,000 dollars of sales a month by the middle of 2010, and it was profitable on paper because the model was simple: take the order, pass it to a dealer, let the dealer ship it, keep the markup.[4]
The problem was control. Indian operators could not make American dealers ship on time or handle returns properly, delivery times stretched to twenty days, and complaints rose. Bansal flew to the United States and spent three months there trying to fix an operation he did not own, and came back with the conclusion that the model was not repairable.[4] The decision the team took next is the founding decision of Lenskart: if the same business was going to be built, it had to be built in a market where the company could own the inventory, the warehouse and the delivery, and India was that market even though Indian e-commerce was barely a market at the time.[4]
He recounts the following year without much decoration. Between 50 and 60 per cent of customers believed contact lenses were custom made and took a week to arrive, which was the knowledge gap the website existed to close; there were 75,000 possible contact lens powers and the company stocked about half of them; and warehouses had to be built before demand rather than after.[4] Flyrr was wound up as Lenskart grew, and SearchMyCampus, which by then was earning almost two crore rupees a year, was left behind with it.[4]
The other three websites, and the one that survived
Lenskart's first venture round came with a condition attached. When IDG Ventures India offered four million dollars in 2011, the firm's reasoning was that Titan had built a large eyewear business inside a general retail chain, and that a company which added watches, bags and jewellery could be bigger still.[3] Bansal agreed, and within six months the company had launched Watchkart and Bagskart, followed by Jewelskart in 2012.[2][3]
The plan worked on the top line and failed on the bottom. Revenue across the group rose from about 30 lakh rupees to about 10 crore rupees by 2013, but the new sites lost money while Lenskart, which contributed only about two crore rupees of sales, made roughly one crore of profit on them.[3] He was stuck: the growth stories were the loss-making ones, investors liked the growth, and shutting three websites that were doubling every year looked like panic.[3]
The resolution came from Ronnie Screwvala, the media entrepreneur who had invested in Valyoo in December 2012 and who ran brainstorming sessions with Bansal that were about customers rather than valuation.[3] Over a breakfast in January 2013 he asked what Bansal wanted to build, heard that the ambition was to change eyewear, and then asked why he was running four businesses if that was the goal.[3] When Bansal objected that closing the others would leave him unable to raise money, Screwvala offered to put in more money himself at the same valuation and without a haircut.[3] The three sites were shut, Lenskart was funded again in February 2013, and by the end of 2014 only Lenskart.com was left.[2][3] The episode is still quoted by Screwvala as the clearest example he knows of focus paying for itself.[3]
Money, funding and valuation
Lenskart's funding history tracks the Indian venture cycle almost year by year. IDG Ventures India put in 4 million dollars in 2011.[2] In January 2015 TPG Growth, TR Capital and IDG invested 135 crore rupees, and in May 2016 the International Finance Corporation, Adveq Management, TPG Growth and IDG invested a total of 60 million dollars, with Azim Premji's family office adding about 200 crore rupees in September of that year.[2] Ratan Tata and Kris Gopalakrishnan also bought stakes.[2]
The step change came in December 2019, when SoftBank's Vision Fund led a round that made Lenskart a unicorn, with press reports putting the size of the investment at about 231 million dollars and later accounts at about 275 million dollars.[2][3] KKR invested 95 million dollars in May 2021, and in July 2021 Temasek and Falcon Edge led a round of 220 million dollars at a valuation of 2.5 billion dollars.[2] By July 2022, after a 200 million dollar round led by Alpha Wave Global, the company was valued at 4.5 billion dollars, and in March 2023 the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority put 500 million dollars in at the same valuation, with ChrysCapital adding 100 million dollars in June.[2] In June 2024, Temasek and Fidelity bought 200 million dollars of shares in a secondary deal that valued the company at 5 billion dollars.[2]
From early on, Bansal made a point of the company's profitability being real rather than projected. In the financial year 2016 to 2017, losses of about 263 crore rupees were larger than operating revenue of about 179 crore rupees; the next year revenue rose to about 292 crore rupees and the loss fell to about 118 crore rupees.[3] The company reported its first profit in the year to March 2020, kept it in the following year, and by the year to March 2022 had operating revenue of about 1,400 crore rupees against 905 crore rupees a year earlier, with an operating margin of about 69 per cent, which Bansal attributes to fixed prices and vertical integration rather than to price rises.[3]
Net worth and wealth
Bansal's wealth comes almost entirely from his stake in Lenskart and it became measurable when the company listed. Press estimates after the listing placed his personal net worth at more than a billion dollars, most of it the value of his holding in the eyewear business he started in his parents' house.[1][2] Before the listing, the figure was an estimate based on the last private valuation of 5 billion dollars in 2024.[2]
Two features of his wealth are worth noting. The first is that it is concentrated: unlike investors who spread capital across many companies, he holds stock in the business he runs, so his net worth moves with Lenskart's share price and with nothing else.[2] The second is timing. He was worth very little in the years when Lenskart was fighting to survive, and the value of the company only became liquid after more than a decade of losses and a management decision, in 2013, to shrink the business in order to focus it.[3]
The company's own numbers give a sense of the scale he built. Lenskart's stores number more than 2,000, its factory at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan is described in the company's material as having a capacity of 50 million units a year, and the acquisition of Owndays created a combined revenue base of about 650 million dollars.[2] His wealth is the founder's share of that machine rather than the proceeds of any sale.
Wife, children and parents
Bansal is married to Nidhi Mittal and the couple have one son.[7] Mittal came from a media background, worked as a media professional, founded a content marketing agency and is the chairperson of an eyewear brand, which makes her one of the few members of his immediate family with a public professional profile.[7] The two have been married since well before Lenskart became a household name, and they are described in the Indian entertainment press as a low profile couple who do not appear together at industry events.[7]
His parents, Bal Kishan Bansal and Kiran Bansal, appear in his public story mainly as the people whose house the company was run from and who could not understand why their son, with a Microsoft job, wanted to sell spectacles online.[1][4] He has told the story of his father during the pandemic, when hospital oxygen was scarce and his father decided to give away his own extra cylinder to someone who needed it, which Bansal has described as the moment he understood what courage looks like in ordinary life.[8]
On family matters he is careful. He does not post about his son, he has not given interviews about his marriage, and the most detailed account of his family life in the public record is a television magazine listicle on the spouses of the Shark Tank India investors.[7] That is worth stating plainly, because pages like this one are tempted to fill the gap with invention.
Personal life and habits
The public picture of Bansal is of a founder who talks about mistakes more readily than about wins. In a long interview on the company's second decade he listed three of them: not building a culture of questioning small expenses, being customer obsessed without being employee obsessed, and hiring heavily from larger companies and then copying their ways of working instead of letting Lenskart's own people lead.[3] He says the last of these diluted what he calls the company's DNA and that promoting homegrown employees should have come first.[3]
He also describes his own temperament in blunt terms. Asked about his biggest fear in business, he said that he hates living on the edge, and explained that a company must carry a thick profit so that a large investment does not push it into losses.[3] The advice he says he keeps closest came from Tony Hsieh, the chief executive of the shoe retailer Zappos, whom he met at a founders' meeting run by Sequoia: forget the numbers and focus on earnings per order, because a company that does not make money on an order will never be profitable.[3]
His public life since 2021 has been split between the company and television. He appears as an investor on Shark Tank India, has appeared with the other investors as a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2022 and as a guest on The Kapil Sharma Show, and is recognised on the street in a way that he has said he did not expect.[10][11] The television work has made his views on eye care better known than any advertising campaign the company has run.
House and property
Bansal is based in Gurugram, the satellite city on the edge of Delhi where Lenskart Solutions has its headquarters.[1] The choice is a family one as much as a corporate one: his parents' home in south Delhi is where the company began, and the National Capital Region is where he built his first businesses.[3] He has not bought the kind of conspicuous city residence that some of his peers on television own, and no reliable reporting describes his home in detail, so this section states what is documented and stops there.
The property holdings that do matter are the company's. Lenskart's manufacturing plant at Bhiwadi in Rajasthan is a large fixed asset tied to its strategy of making rather than importing lenses and frames, and the store network of more than two thousand outlets consists of leases across India plus company owned outlets in the larger cities.[2] Vertical integration means owning the factories, and owning factories means the balance sheet carries land, buildings and machinery that a pure retailer would not have.
Shark Tank India and television
Bansal is one of the original investors on Shark Tank India, the Indian version of the format in which founders pitch their businesses to a panel of investors for money and advice.[1] The first season began broadcasting in December 2021, and he has appeared in the seasons that followed, alongside investors including Ashneer Grover, Namita Thapar, Vineeta Singh, Aman Gupta, Anupam Mittal and Amit Jain.[1]
The show made him a familiar face, and in some of the deals his contribution has been practical rather than financial. The best known example is Jugadu Kamlesh, a young farmer from Madhya Pradesh who pitched a low cost tractor like vehicle; Bansal invested in the business and the show followed the product through a redesign, with the founder later coming back to report an upgraded model and a first year revenue target of about five crore rupees.[9] That combination of investment and product mentoring is broadly how he is presented on the show, though some of the on screen deals are reported to have been renegotiated or not completed after filming.[1]
Outside the studio he has appeared as a guest on two of India's largest general entertainment programmes, as a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2022 with the other investors, and on The Kapil Sharma Show.[10][11] The exposure is unusual for the head of a company preparing to list on the stock exchange, and the company has used it: the eyewear brand is mentioned constantly on a show watched by tens of millions of households, and the television role costs Lenskart nothing but his time.
The 2025 stock market listing
Lenskart filed for an initial public offering and launched it in October 2025, aiming to raise up to 828 million dollars, with the shares beginning to trade later in the year.[2][1] The issue was reported to be heavily subscribed and the listing gave the company a value measured in billions of dollars, turning years of paper wealth into a market price and giving early backers including IDG Ventures India, TPG, Premji Invest, SoftBank, KKR, Temasek and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority a route to sell.[2]
For Bansal the listing was the end of a fourteen year argument with the market. He had spent the years before it insisting that the company would not come to the exchange until it was well and truly profitable rather than marginally so, telling an interviewer that he did not want Lenskart to be a business that just about makes money, and that he hated the idea of living on the edge.[3] By the time of the offering the company had reported profits for several years running, though the eyewear market remained competitive and the company continued to open stores and factories at a pace that consumes cash.[3]
The listing also settled the question of what the company is. It is not a technology platform that happens to sell reading glasses; it is a retail and manufacturing business with a large online channel, valued on store count, same store growth, factory utilisation and margins, as much as on the website.[2] That is a harder business to be judged on than a software company, and it is the one Bansal chose when he shut the other three websites in 2013.
Controversies and criticism
In 2024, Lenskart's franchise owners accused the company of competing with its own partners, alleging that it opened company owned stores near franchise owned outlets and that some franchisees were treated unfairly on revenue and accounting. Franchise owners from Karnataka filed a police complaint in October 2024 alleging financial fraud, including discrepancies in revenue and misuse of accounting software; the Economic Offences Wing began looking into the complaint, and Lenskart obtained a stay order from the Karnataka High Court in January 2025 that halted the investigation.[2] The dispute is about the terms of a business relationship rather than theft, and it remains the sharpest public criticism of how the company treats partners who paid to sell its products.[2]
The more public storm came in April 2026, when an internal document circulated on social media setting out a workplace dress code. The document permitted hijabs and turbans and other religious attire, according to the reports, while restricting visible Hindu symbols including bindis, tilaks and the sacred thread, and the asymmetry drew a wave of criticism from users, commentators and political figures who described it as religious bias.[1][2] The episode is the only controversy in which Bansal himself was named by large numbers of commenters, and it came at a time when the company was new to public markets and under scrutiny it had not previously faced.
Smaller complaints run through the company's history: that its prices undercut independent opticians and squeezed them out, that its franchise model shifts capital risk to partners, and that a business built on selling eye tests and lenses at national scale cannot be trusted to police its own clinical standards.[2] The company's answer has been that it made spectacles affordable to customers who were being overcharged by neighbourhood opticians, and that its stores and factories are a national chain where the alternative was no chain at all.[3]
Awards and recognition
Bansal's recognition has come mostly as a retail and startup founder rather than as an international figure. He has appeared in the Forbes India rich lists and unicorn trackers, and Lenskart's own story is used in Indian business schools as a case in vertical integration and in the value of focus, a point the investment firm that backed him, Screwvala's outfit, still makes publicly.[3]
He received entrepreneur of the year recognition in Indian retail and startup award ceremonies over the years, though the awards record is thin compared with the company's scale, partly because he built the business in a category that business media treats as unglamorous.[3] In 2022 Forbes India profiled him under the heading of building Lenskart into a profitable unicorn, which is the framing he prefers: not a fast growing loss maker, but a company that makes money selling something people need.[3]
Philanthropy
Bansal's philanthropy is tied to the product rather than separate from it. Lenskart has run large scale eye testing and spectacle distribution campaigns in Indian schools and villages, usually in partnership with non profit organisations, and the company argues that the same factory that makes cheap frames for its stores can make free ones for people who cannot afford them.[2] Millions of Indian children need glasses and do not have them, which is the fact the campaigns are built on, and it is also, as the company acknowledges, a way of building a market in places where nobody currently buys eyewear.[2]
He is also an angel investor in his own right, which is a form of philanthropy with an expected return attached, and the television show has given that activity a public face: a large share of his visible investments are in very small businesses run by first time founders from outside the metropolitan startup circuit.[1][9] Beyond these, there is no large personal foundation, no giving pledge and no announced endowment, and he does not present charity as the purpose of his business life.
Reading the numbers
The financial shape of Lenskart is unusual among Indian consumer internet companies because it stopped losing money early and then kept its margins. Revenue in the year to March 2017 was about 179 crore rupees against a loss of about 263 crore rupees; a year later revenue was about 292 crore rupees and the loss had fallen to about 118 crore rupees; the year to March 2020 was the first profitable one.[3] By the year to March 2022 the company reported operating revenue of about 1,400 crore rupees, up from about 905 crore in the previous year, with a gross margin of about 69 per cent and an operating profit run rate of roughly 20 crore rupees a month.[3]
The engine behind those numbers was the shift from an online only business to a chain with thousands of shops. Stores raised conversion, because people who can try a frame buy one, and they reduced advertising spend per sale because the shop window does the work. The company also cut costs by making its own lenses and pushing its own brands, which carry a higher margin than imported frames.[2] The 2025 listing raised up to 828 million dollars and gave the company a public currency for acquisitions and expansion.[2]
The risk in the numbers is the same as the opportunity: Lenskart is a retailer, and retailers are valued on store level economics. If a new store costs more to open than the sales it generates, growth destroys value rather than creating it, and the franchise dispute of 2024 was ultimately an argument about who carries that risk.[2] Bansal's answer, taken from Tony Hsieh, is to watch the profit on every order rather than the total revenue: a business that makes money on an order can be scaled without limit, and a business that does not, cannot be scaled at all.[3]
