Who Kushal Tanwar is
Kushal Tanwar is a reality television contestant from the MTV ecosystem who crossed into Hindi general entertainment television in 2026. He is known to almost everyone who follows him as Gullu, a nickname that predates the television career and has outlived the name it was attached to. On Roadies and on Splitsvilla the shows used Gullu more often than Kushal, and Bigg Boss 20 followed the same pattern.[1][2]
His entry into the industry was not through acting, music or a family connection. It was through auditioning for a youth reality format and doing well enough in it to be invited back. That is a career path that barely existed twenty years ago and is now one of the standard routes into Indian television, particularly for people who are comfortable being watched rather than performing a script.[1][2]
The nickname is also a small case study in how search works for a television personality. Gullu is easier to say, easier to search and easier to put on a graphic than Kushal Tanwar, which is why both names now appear in the same sentence in most coverage of him.[1]
Before television
Very little of his life before 2024 is on the record. He grew up outside the entertainment industry, finished school and began college before moving into reality television and content work, according to the contestant profile that the Economic Times published during Roadies. He has not given interviews that set out his schooling, his hometown or his family's occupation in any detail.[1][6]
What he has said on camera is about pressure rather than background. On Bigg Boss 20 he spoke about the expectations placed on young men in the community he comes from, where families arrange marriages early and a son who is not settled is pushed towards one. That is the context he gave for a marriage that lasted less than half a year.[3]
The absence of a detailed early biography is not unusual for a contestant who became famous at 25, and it is worth stating plainly because the biography sites fill the gap with invention. The only reliable material about his life before Roadies is what he has chosen to say on the shows themselves.[1][3]
Roadies Double Cross: voted out, brought back, and the winner
Roadies XX, branded Roadies Double Cross, was hosted by Ranvijay Singh and ran with gang leaders rather than a single mentor. Elvish Yadav, Neha Dhupia, Prince Narula, Rhea Chakraborty and Gautam Gulati were the judges, and for Elvish it was his first season as a mentor. Tanwar auditioned into Elvish's gang and impressed from the first round.[2]
Then his own team voted him out. It is the kind of thing that ends a reality television run quietly, and instead it became the spine of his season. He returned as a wildcard, was picked up by Gautam Gulati's team, and fought his way to the ticket to the finale. Once he had that ticket he chose to go back to Elvish's gang, and he won from there.[2][6]
The prize was ten lakh rupees and a Hero Kaizma motorcycle. More important than either was the shape of the story: a contestant rejected by his own people, brought back by the format, and then winning against the team that had dropped him. Reality television does not often produce a cleaner arc by accident.[2]
His statement after the win was about the years before it. He said the title was a silent scream finally heard, that there had been no support and no guiding hand, and that nobody had lifted him when he was down. It is the standard register of a reality show winner and, in his case, consistent with everything else he has said about the period before 2025.[2][6]
Splitsvilla and the MTV years
Before Bigg Boss 20 he appeared on MTV Splitsvilla, the channel's dating format, and on a show called Maa Hain Na. The Splitsvilla stint surprised viewers who had only seen him as a Roadies competitor, because the format is built on pairing and conversation rather than on physical tasks.[1]
The sequence matters more than any single appearance. Roadies gave him a task reputation, Splitsvilla gave him a personality edit, and the two together produced a contestant who could be cast in almost any format. That is how reality careers compound in India: one show feeds the next casting call, and the channel gets a familiar face at a lower cost than a fresh celebrity.[1][2]
It also means his reputation was built inside a single network's audience. Bigg Boss 20 was the first time he was in front of the general entertainment viewer, which is a much larger and older group than the MTV audience, and the show introduced him under the nickname rather than the name.[1]
Content creation and the 1.9 million
Between and around the shows he built a following on Instagram of close to 1.9 million people, according to the reporting that profiles him. The account is run with a team, and the bio during Bigg Boss 20 listed his Roadies and Splitsvilla credits alongside the current season.[1]
This number is the part of his profile that matters commercially. A reality contestant's fee is set by the show, but the brand work that follows is set by reach, and 1.9 million followers is enough to make him interesting to advertisers in the youth category. It is also why his casting made sense to the makers: he arrived with an audience that the show did not have to build.[1]
His content is short form and built on the same persona the shows use, which is a different skill from acting and a harder one to sustain. A person who is funny in a two minute clip for six months is doing something that a scripted performance does not require.[1]
The marriage that lasted five months
On the episode of 23 September 2026 he told Qazi Touqeer that he had gone through a divorce in 2024. His account was that the marriage was arranged, that it lasted about four and a half to five months, and that he had been under pressure to marry early because he was not settled in a career at the time.[3]
He described the decision as one that everybody around him found wrong and that he believed was right for him, and he said he had come out of what he called a huge crisis. He also spoke about the effect on his family, who he said had stopped being in touch with him after the separation.[3]
He has not named his former wife and has not given any detail about her or about the divorce proceedings. Everything in the public record about that marriage comes from what he chose to say on the show, which is a narrow and self-interested source and the only one available.[1][3]
The timing of the disclosure is worth noting. He spoke about it in the third week of the season, in a conversation with the one contestant in the house who had also kept his personal life quiet. Reality shows reward disclosure, and a divorce is the kind of material a contestant releases when the audience has begun to find him flat.[3]
Bigg Boss 20: the house and the format
He entered the Bigg Boss 20 house on 6 September 2026 as one of sixteen contestants, with Salman Khan returning as host. The season was built around a theme called Vardaan, and the house, designed by Varsha Jain, is reported to cover about ten thousand square feet and to run on 104 cameras.[1]
His Roadies background made him an obvious pick for tasks, and his age put him in the younger group in a house that also contained contestants in their forties. Fan discussion early in the season listed him among the favourites alongside Qazi Touqeer and Yung DSA, which is a measure of how much of the audience arrived already knowing him.[1]
The format rewards a particular kind of presence, and it is not the Roadies kind. A task format measures whether you can do a thing; Bigg Boss measures whether people want to watch you sitting in a garden. Contestants who arrive with a task reputation often take weeks to work out that the skills do not transfer.[1]
The fight with Nakul Dhull
In mid October the season produced its most discussed confrontation, and Tanwar was in the middle of it. The argument began over a conversation involving Qazi Touqeer and Scout OP. Qazi had been talking about an earlier incident in which he had spat in Scout's ear during a playful exchange, and Scout had not made an issue of it at the time.[4][5]
Nakul Dhull, the season's second wildcard, overheard Qazi discussing it with Tanwar and Mahhi Vij, told Scout what was being said, and then questioned Qazi about why he had spoken behind Scout's back. Scout confronted Qazi, and Tanwar intervened. A remark from Tanwar angered Nakul, and the argument turned physical, with pushing and shoving that other housemates had to break up.[4][5]
The consequences are the part of the story that never settled. India TV reported that Nakul Dhull was evicted at midnight following the altercation, and the report is specific about the sequence. News18 subsequently reported that he had not been evicted. Both accounts were published within days of each other and this entry cannot resolve them.[4]
What is not in dispute is that a fight between two contestants over a third contestant's remark became the defining clip of Tanwar's season. The incident also pulled in Qazi and Scout, and it is the reason the phrase Qazi, Scout and Gullu appears together in so much of the October coverage.[4][5]
How the nickname became the brand
Gullu is the sort of nickname that a television show can build a graphic around, and the shows did. It is short, it is affectionate, it is slightly comic, and it does not sound like a star's name, which is precisely why it worked for a contestant whose appeal was that he seemed like somebody from the audience.[1]
The cost is that the nickname competes with the real name in search. Anyone looking for him has to know that Gullu and Kushal Tanwar are the same person, which is why almost every article about him now carries both in the headline or the first line. For somebody building a personal brand that is both an advantage and a ceiling.[1]
It also tells you how he was cast. A contestant with a memorable label is easier to write for, easier to promote and easier for an audience to remember in a season with sixteen people. The nickname did work that a publicist would otherwise have had to do.[1]
What has not been confirmed
His date of birth is not public. Profiles report 1999, which would make him 26 or 27 in 2026 depending on the month, but he has not confirmed a year and there is no record of a birthday. His height and weight are the same story: the numbers on biography sites disagree and none of them quote him.[1]
His fee for Bigg Boss 20 has not been disclosed by him or by the makers, and no verified figure exists for his earnings from Roadies, Splitsvilla or brand work. The prize money from Roadies, ten lakh rupees and a motorcycle, is the only figure that is on the record.[1][2]
His former wife has not been named publicly by him or by any outlet this entry could reach, and the date of the marriage, the date of the divorce and the terms of the separation are all unconfirmed. The five month figure is his own description, given on camera.[3]
Whether he was still inside the Bigg Boss 20 house in early November is not something this entry can confirm. Reports of an elimination circulated in October and were not officially confirmed, and the coverage of the 1 November episode does not mention him.[4][5]
The Instagram follower count of about 1.9 million comes from published reporting. Instagram profiles cannot be checked without logging in, so the number is repeated here as a reported figure rather than a verified one.[1]
