Person
Alakh Pandey
Alakh Pandey is an Indian educator and entrepreneur who started teaching physics on YouTube for free and turned that audience into PhysicsWallah, one of the largest education companies in the country. He left an engineering degree in his third year, taught in small coaching centres for a few thousand rupees a month, and built a company that teaches lakhs of students at a fraction of what his rivals charge. In November 2025 he listed it on the Indian stock exchanges, the first edtech company in India to do so.

Early life and family
Alakh Pandey was born in about 1992 in Allahabad, the city now called Prayagraj, in Uttar Pradesh. The Hurun India rich list has described him as 32 years old in its 2024 and 2025 editions, and the reporting on him in 2023 described him as 31, which points to a birth year around 1991 or 1992. He is the son of a family that lost its footing early: he has said in interviews and on television that the family lost its home when he was in class 6 and that his father sold oil on a bicycle to keep the household running.[4][5]
He began earning at 13 or 14. By his own account he started teaching children in class 8 when he was in class 8, and the money mattered to the family rather than to him. In class 11 he cycled a few kilometres to teach about half a dozen students of class 9, which he has described as the moment he discovered that a classroom of curious people gave him a feeling nothing else did. When he was in class 12 his bicycle was stolen and he could not afford to replace it, a detail he has repeated in interviews as a measure of how thin the household was.[2][4]
Prayagraj in those years was one of the coaching capitals of India, a city where success in the engineering and medical entrance examinations was a local industry. That environment shaped everything that followed. He was a student inside that system, then a teacher inside it, and the business he later built is best understood as an argument with the fees that system charged. In the Forbes India profile of 2022, the reporter described him as a son of the soil who connected with students in smaller towns because he had come from the same place.[2]
His family details beyond this are not in the public record. He has never named his parents in the licensed press, there is no reported account of siblings, and he has not described his childhood home beyond the loss of it. This page states that rather than filling the gap. The detail that is documented is economic rather than domestic: a household that lost its house, a father on a bicycle selling oil, and a teenager who started teaching for money.[4]
He has also said that he was heavily involved in theatre and street plays during his school and college years, and that at one point he thought of acting as a career. Anyone who has watched one of his classes or his videos will recognise the training: the sudden shifts in volume, the dramatic pauses, the shayari used as a memory hook. He has said himself that dramatics exerts a strong influence on the way he teaches.[2]
Education and the engineering dropout
Pandey joined an engineering college in Kanpur and left it in his third year without a degree. He has said he chose mechanical engineering in the belief that it would let him study physics, and that the course turned out to be something else. Reporting on his background names the institution as Harcourt Butler Technical University in Kanpur, and describes the course as mechanical engineering, abandoned in the third year because he was struggling with it.[2][5]
He has spoken about the cost of that period honestly, including a stretch of about six months during his college years when he was depressed. In the Forbes India profile he described himself as being in the third year, unable to make his studies work, and having understood that the classroom he wanted to be in was the one where he was teaching rather than the one where he was being taught.[2]
By February 2014 he was in an Allahabad coaching institute at 22, having dropped out of the Kanpur college and come home. That first paying class, at a place called Softways Coaching Institute, paid him 5,000 rupees a month from an evening class, and he took a second assignment in the hope of doubling his income. It is the smallest number in his biography and the one that carries the most weight, because it is the price at which the company that later listed on the exchanges was first sold.[2][4]
There is no second attempt at a degree in the record, no diploma and no formal teacher training. Everything in his education that is documented after 2014 is self taught or taught in public: the channel, the lectures, the curriculum planning, and the decision to keep the entire physics syllabus for the engineering entrance examination free for anybody with an internet connection.[1][2]
His own explanation of why the company looks the way it does comes from this period. He has said that as a student preparing for competitive examinations he watched good coaching stay out of reach because of its fees, that he had lived the same constraint, and that he wanted the platform to serve the students who could not pay for premium coaching. That is the argument he still makes for the company's pricing, and it is the reason his courses are priced at a few thousand rupees rather than a lakh.[2][3][4]
The coaching years and the YouTube channel
Between 2014 and 2016 Pandey taught physics in coaching centres in Allahabad and Kanpur, and the work went badly before it went well. The Forbes India profile records his first class at Softways in February 2014: four physics teachers had already quit, the students were bored, and the chapter he was given was one nobody wanted to teach. He started the lesson badly, then improvised with a line about the relationship between the units of force that got the room laughing, and held their attention for the next hour. He has described the lesson as the moment he understood his method: be loud, be funny, be sarcastic, be strict, and go slowly at the start.[2]
Not every institute saw it that way. Press accounts of his early years say he was thrown out of several coaching centres, partly because the shayari and the showmanship did not fit how those places expected a physics teacher to behave. What looked like a liability inside a classroom of forty became the whole product on the internet.[4]
The channel went up in 2016 and grew slowly at first. It had just under 4,000 subscribers in 2017 and over 22 lakh by 2019, which is the kind of curve that comes from a teaching style rather than a marketing plan. The lectures were free, in Hindi and Hinglish, aimed at exactly the students who could not afford Kota, and they were uploaded for the two largest examinations in the country, engineering and medical.[2][3]
The persona on the channel is the man himself. He is about five feet five inches tall and shaved his head, and his students copied him to the point where he had to ask a group of them calling themselves the Takla Gang to go back to their books. He wrote formulas on old jeans and wore them, got a tattoo of Pi and later of the equation linking mass and energy, and got one of Albert Einstein's face on his forearm. His classes began with the students chanting a line about succeeding. His own comment on all of this was that he never wanted a cult, and that he kept telling students to focus on nothing else.[2]
By the end of 2020 the audience had become an institution. The channel was approaching 42 lakh subscribers, monthly active users had crossed 13 lakh, and the app he had built with his co-founder was selling a full year of engineering preparation for 999 rupees. In February 2025 the channel had 13.3 million subscribers and the app had been downloaded more than ten million times on the Play Store.[1][2][3]
Business career and companies
The company began as a phone call. Prateek Maheshwari, who ran a startup called PenPencil that built technology for education businesses, had offered to build Pandey an app in 2018 and was refused because the teacher was focused on YouTube. In June 2020 the two revisited the idea and incorporated PhysicsWallah, named after the channel. The striking fact of the early company is that the two founders did not meet in person for the first nine months, and by the time they did, more than 150,000 students were already studying with them.[3]
The first product was the app, and it failed on day one. Pandey went live on schedule in May 2020 in front of a class of Class 12 students who had paid 999 rupees each for a year of preparation. The app took nearly two lakh hits, crashed, crashed again the next day, and by the fourth day had more than 35,000 students enrolled and no live classes to give them. He refunded the money and put out recorded lectures while Maheshwari's team scaled the technology, which the co-founder has said took ten to fifteen days. Students stayed, and the model settled into what it has been since: recorded and live classes at a price that made volume the only route to profit.[2][3]
In February 2021 the company was nearly killed by a rival's cheque. A well funded competitor offered 75 crore rupees for a 10 per cent stake, and Pandey refused it. According to the Forbes India account, the rival then used the money to poach his teachers instead, and resignation letters began arriving. Pandey's answer was a video in which he said that if they took one, he would produce a hundred Alakh Pandeys. It got over 2.3 million views, the departures slowed, and the episode is still the clearest illustration of the company's central risk: it is built on a person.[2]
The funding arrived in June 2022, when PhysicsWallah raised 100 million dollars in its first round at a valuation above a billion dollars, a unicorn in a single step. By then the company had a business model that its rivals did not: no customer acquisition cost, because the audience was already in the app, and a product priced at a fraction of what Kota charged. Pandey told Forbes India that he had not known what a unicorn was, and claimed a 60 per cent Ebitda margin while saying he could not run a business that lost money because it would depress him.[2]
The company has since grown by acquisition as well as by audience. FreeCo, a doubt solving platform, was the first purchase in August 2022, followed the same year by publishing businesses and by iNeuron, bought from the S. Chand Group for 138 crore rupees. In June 2023 it took 50 per cent of Xylem Learning in Kozhikode and announced a 500 crore rupee plan for the southern market. By September 2023 it had made more than nine acquisitions and said all of them were profitable, which is not a claim most edtech companies of that period could make.[1][3]
The acquisitions map onto the strategy he describes as hyperlocal. PhysicsWallah wants a presence wherever there is a student with an internet connection, and where there is no internet, it wants a classroom. The company signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Andhra Pradesh in December 2024 for a University of Innovation, and in September 2026 followed it with a five year partnership with Mohan Babu University covering nearly 18,000 students, part of his stated plan to shift his own base to South India.[1][13]
PhysicsWallah: the app, the prices and the growth
The business model rests on one decision: charge almost nothing. Courses start at around 3,000 to 4,000 rupees in the early years, against the 40,000 to 1 lakh rupees that the large Kota institutes charged for the same preparation, and the company has said its offerings average around 4,000 rupees for competitive courses today. Low prices mean thin margins per student, which means the company has to teach a very large number of students, which is exactly what a free YouTube channel of millions of subscribers provides.[3][7]
That is why the company's marketing spend has been unusually small for its size. Maheshwari's explanation to Business Today was that communities are built on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook and are then monetised through the app, and that the company never needed to spend heavily on advertising. Analysts quoted in the same article said the low price produced volumes that no rival could match, and the volume is what makes the numbers work.[3]
The company's own numbers show how far the model has travelled. In the year to March 2025 it enrolled 45 lakh students, up from 30 lakh the previous year, on revenue of 2,886 crore rupees against 1,940 crore rupees a year earlier, while the net loss narrowed to 243 crore rupees from 1,131 crore rupees. Its pitch to students is now assisted by artificial intelligence: Pandey has said the platform uses AI to resolve 80 to 85 per cent of students' doubts quickly and accurately.[7]
The product range has widened from the two entrance examinations that made the channel famous. The company now runs 50 YouTube channels and 16 online test preparation verticals, covering the civil services examination, Olympiads, school boards and a range of state examinations, alongside upskilling programmes and hybrid learning. It also runs UPSC Wallah and acquired test preparation businesses in the south to serve regional syllabuses.[1][3]
His own summary of the company's position is the line he gave an interviewer in 2025: after the government of India, he said, he teaches the largest number of students in the country. That sentence is both a boast and a description of the risk, because a company that teaches that many people at that price lives or dies on volume, completion rates and the cost of reaching the next ten lakh students.[7]
The offline network: Vidyapeeth, Pathshala and the new centres
PhysicsWallah was built online and has grown offline. The company runs two kinds of physical presence: PW Vidyapeeth, which is a conventional coaching centre where teachers teach in the room, and PW Pathshala, where students sit in a centre and are taught virtually by a teacher elsewhere. The online price advantage does not carry over completely into the buildings, and Pandey has said so plainly, explaining that the economics of running a classroom are different and that offline courses cost more.[3]
The pace of the expansion is the striking part. The company had 67 Vidyapeeth centres and 16 Pathshala centres in September 2023, according to Business Today, and by 30 June 2025 it had 303 offline centres across 152 cities in India and the Middle East, up from 182 a year earlier. The draft listing papers named the next set of towns: Muzaffarpur, Dhanbad, Akola, Latur, Rajkot, Ujjain, Bathinda, Jorhat and Chennai.[3][7]
The strategy behind that list is hyperlocal, in his description. Instead of expecting a student from a small town to migrate to Kota or Delhi, the company wants a hub and a set of learning centres inside the student's own district, so the student stays at home and the company carries the fixed cost of the room. He has said the plan is to be present wherever there is an internet connection and a student.[7]
The expansion is also what the listing money is for. Of the issue proceeds, the company set aside roughly 710 crore rupees for marketing and 941 crore rupees for acquisitions, with the rest going to centres, lease expenses and cloud infrastructure. PhysicsWallah is therefore using public market capital to buy physical classrooms, which is the opposite of the asset light model that Indian edtech sold to investors five years ago.[7][8][9]
In September 2026 he said he would move his own base to South India as part of the expansion, and the company announced a five year partnership with Mohan Babu University to provide online courses in artificial intelligence, skilling and careers to nearly 18,000 of its students. The southern push follows the Xylem investment of 2023 and is aimed at a market where the company has historically been weaker.[1][13]
Funding, the unicorn round and the listing
PhysicsWallah raised less outside money than any of its large Indian peers, and later than most of them. The first round was the 100 million dollar round of June 2022 at a valuation above a billion dollars, six years after the YouTube channel started and two years after the company was incorporated. Series A at a billion dollar valuation is rare anywhere, and it was possible because the company had grown to that size on its own cash.[1][2]
The second round came in September 2024, when the company raised 210 million dollars led by Hornbill Capital, with Lightspeed Venture Partners, GSV and WestBridge Capital participating, at a valuation of 2.8 billion dollars. The company had earlier been reported to have made a confidential pre-filing with the market regulator, and the round was read at the time as the last private step before a listing.[10]
The listing itself was on 18 November 2025. The issue was priced at 103 to 109 rupees a share and raised 3,480.71 crore rupees in total, made up of a fresh issue of 28.45 crore shares worth 3,100.71 crore rupees and an offer for sale of 3.49 crore shares worth 380 crore rupees, in which he and Maheshwari sold 190 crore rupees worth of shares each. The company was valued at over 31,500 crore rupees at the upper end of the band.[8][9]
The book was not a runaway success and did not need to be. It closed with an overall subscription of 1.81 times, with qualified institutional buyers at 2.70 times, retail at 1.06 times and non institutional investors at 48 per cent. The grey market premium had fallen to zero by the close, and the anchor book of 1,563 crore rupees from 57 investors, including ICICI Prudential, Kotak, Nippon Life, Franklin Templeton, Goldman Sachs, Fidelity and Aditya Birla Sun Life, is what carried the issue. Think Investments also bought 10.72 million shares from 14 employees at 127 rupees each in a secondary deal worth 136 crore rupees.[8]
The shares then opened at 145 rupees on the NSE and 143.10 rupees on the BSE, a premium of about 33 per cent on the issue price, which turned a lukewarm subscription into a strong debut. The promoter holding fell from 80.62 per cent to about 72 per cent, and no early investor sold any shares in the offering, which the company's co-founder described afterwards by saying that PhysicsWallah was the good boy in a tough neighbourhood.[7][9]
PhysicsWallah after listing: the numbers
The first year as a listed company has been about proving that the growth can be profitable at the margin. In its first quarter results for the financial year ending March 2027, reported in August 2026, the company posted an Ebitda of 52 crore rupees against a loss of 21 crore rupees a year earlier, with other income nearly doubling to 109 crore rupees. Excluding that other income and accounting for lease payments, the company still lost 44 crore rupees, though less than the 89 crore rupees lost a year earlier. Revenue rose 24 per cent.[12]
The shares responded to those numbers with a rally of about 8 per cent, and brokers including JM Financial took the quarter positively, citing online growth and improving profitability. The company also stuck to its growth target for the year. The reaction matters because the shares had by then been listed for nine months in a market that has been unkind to newly listed consumer internet companies.[12]
The investor base has begun to turn over. In August 2026, Lightspeed, which had put about 420 crore rupees into the company in October 2024, exited through a block deal worth 550 crore rupees, a return of about 30 per cent; the prospectus had put its acquisition cost at 89.86 rupees a share after adjusting for conversions and bonus shares. A 30 per cent return in under two years is a modest outcome for a venture fund that had backed a company now valued in the tens of thousands of crores.[11]
The workforce is one of the largest in Indian edtech, and so is the student base. The company taught 45 lakh students in the year to March 2025 and runs 303 centres in 152 cities, which means several thousand teachers, centre staff and support employees in addition to its engineering and content teams. That structure is more expensive and less flexible than a purely online business, and it is the direction the company has deliberately chosen.[7]
For the founder, the change of state from a private company to a listed one is mainly a change in the audience. The numbers now come out every ninety days, the guidance is public, the share price is a daily referendum on his strategy, and the company's losses are no longer a private conversation with venture funds but a line item in the papers. He has said he is part of the country's education system rather than a critic of it, and that he cannot complain about it.[7][12]
Net worth and wealth
Pandey's reported wealth has moved with the company's valuation, and the movement has been extreme. The Hurun India rich list put him and Maheshwari on it for the first time in September 2022 with a combined 4,000 crore rupees, after the unicorn round. In August 2024 the list carried him at 32 years of age with 4,500 crore rupees. In October 2025 it recorded a leap of 223 per cent in a single year to 14,510 crore rupees, with Maheshwari at 14,520 crore rupees.[4][5]
The 2025 figure put him ahead of Shah Rukh Khan, whose wealth the same list recorded at 12,490 crore rupees, and the comparison became a small news cycle of its own in the Indian press. The list measures shareholding rather than cash, and the sharp rise reflected the jump in the company's private valuation before the listing rather than any change in his salary or dividends.[5]
The listing converted a large part of that paper into a listed security. The promoter group held 80.62 per cent of the company before the issue and about 72 per cent afterwards, and the two founders sold 190 crore rupees worth of shares each in the offer for sale, which is real money rather than a valuation mark. Since the shares trade, his wealth can now be recalculated every day from the price on the exchange.[7][8][9]
He has not been reported as a large investor in other companies, and there is no second business attributed to him in the licensed press. His wealth is one holding in one company, plus whatever the share sales have realised, and the company's own losses mean there have been no dividends to add to it.[5][7]
The figures quoted in the press vary depending on the source and the date, and readers should treat them as estimates. What is documented is the mechanism: a majority promoter stake, a listed share price, an initial public offering that raised 3,480 crore rupees, and a founder who has said he could not run a business that loses money because it would depress him.[5][8]
Wife, children and family
Alakh Pandey is married to Shivani Dubey, a journalist from Prayagraj. The two were engaged in May 2022 and married in February 2023, with a reception at a five star hotel in Delhi. She has written for titles including i-D, Refinery29, ELLE and VICE and covers entertainment, culture, politics and social trends, and the press coverage of the wedding noted that she comes from the same city as her husband.[6]
The wedding was reported at the time as a business story as much as a personal one, because Pandey had just become a unicorn founder and had met the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh about building coaching centres in the state a week or so before it. His own public statements about family have been limited to his childhood, his parents' circumstances and the story of teaching for money as a teenager.[6]
There is no reported information about children, and no publisher has written about the couple's household. This page does not speculate. Where a fact about a private individual has not been published by a licensed outlet, the honest entry says so, and the published record here stops at the marriage and the wedding reception.[6]
The one family detail he has spoken about publicly and repeatedly is the loss of the family home when he was in class 6 and his father selling oil on a bicycle. He has used that history to explain both the pricing of his courses and his own attitude to money, and it is the only part of his family life that he has put in the public record himself.[4]
His mother's name and his siblings, if any, are not in the licensed press, and this entry leaves those rows empty rather than filling them from social media. The company does not publish his family details either, which is consistent with a founder who talks about students far more often than he talks about himself.[1][4]
Personal life, the persona and the tattoos
Pandey is one of the very few Indian founders whose face is more recognisable than his company's logo, and that is a deliberate outcome rather than an accident. The persona was built on YouTube for six years before there was a company to sell: a bald teacher in black shirts and jeans, loud, funny, sarcastic, strict, mixing physics with poetry, and speaking to students in Hindi and Hinglish rather than in the English of a coaching brochure.[2]
The details of that persona are its own kind of biography. He is about five feet five inches tall and shaved his head, and at one point wrote physics formulas on an old pair of jeans and wore them. Students copied the shaved head so closely that they organised themselves as a group he had to ask to go back to studying. His classes opened with the students chanting a line about succeeding, which he has described as hard core motivation.[2]
He has several tattoos, and he talks about them as a physics teacher would. The first, in 2016, was the symbol for Pi below his left shoulder. The same year he had the equation relating mass and energy tattooed on his right forearm, and in 2022 he added Albert Einstein's face on the same arm, two weeks before he spoke to Forbes India. He has said the only rule is that there are no rules, meaning the laws of physics keep changing.[2]
The corners of the office carry the same theme. At the company's Noida headquarters every cabin is named after a concept, his own room is called energy and carries the equation of mass and energy on the door, and the other cabins are named light, force and gravity. The same office holds the awards YouTube gave him for his subscriber base.[2]
He also makes jokes about being a teacher rather than a businessman, and they are usually the answer he gives when asked about money, as when he replied to a question about the company's name by laughing and saying that they could not run a business that loses money because it would depress him. The gap between that persona and the listed company with a 31,500 crore rupee valuation is the interesting thing about him, and it is a gap he has never tried to close.[2][5]
House and property
No house purchase by Pandey has been reported by a licensed publisher, and this entry does not attribute any property to him. He works from Noida, where PhysicsWallah is headquartered, and has said he plans to shift his base to South India for the company's expansion, but neither statement is a statement about where he lives.[7][13]
The one property story connected to him is not a home but a school. In June 2026 it was reported that a village school in Vaidpura in Greater Noida had been upgraded at his instance into a learning hub with a digital library holding over 1,000 books, 30 laptops, free internet and air conditioning, open from 8 in the morning to 8 at night, for rural students preparing for examinations such as the civil services and the medical entrance test. That is a facility built for other people's children.[4]
The company's own property footprint is very large but rented. PhysicsWallah runs 303 offline centres in 152 cities, and the listing papers set aside money for lease expenses at existing facilities as well as for new ones, which tells the reader that the classrooms are leased rather than owned. His personal balance sheet, as far as the public record shows, is still mostly one shareholding.[7][8]
Wealth list coverage in India often carries details of a founder's homes, and the Hurun entries for Pandey do not. There is no reported family home in Prayagraj, no apartment in Delhi or Noida attributed to him in the press, and no holiday property. This section exists to say exactly that rather than leaving the question hanging.[4][5]
Awards and recognition
His recognition has come from three places: the wealth lists, the education market, and the entertainment industry's decision that his life was worth dramatising. On the lists, Hurun India first recorded him and Maheshwari in September 2022 with 4,000 crore rupees each, and the 2025 edition put him at 14,510 crore rupees, a rise of 223 per cent that the report itself described as evidence of how quickly wealth is now created in India.[4][5]
The market recognition is harder to measure but larger. His YouTube channel had 13.3 million subscribers by February 2025 and the app had been downloaded more than ten million times, which makes him one of the most followed teachers in the country. The company's own claim, in his words, is that it teaches the largest number of students in India after the government.[1][7]
The two web series are the clearest sign that he has become a public figure rather than just a founder. A six episode series on his life and the company was released on Amazon miniTV in December 2022 with Shreedhar Dubey playing him. A second series called Hello Bachhon, produced by The Viral Fever with Vineet Kumar Singh in the lead, premiered on Netflix in March 2026; the review in The Hindu described the show as earnest and slightly diffuse, which is a fair description of how the founder's story reads when it is compressed into episodes.[1]
He has also been recognised in the industry's own terms: the company became the first Indian edtech firm to list on the exchanges, and its listing was treated by the press as a milestone for a sector that had spent three years being written off after the collapse of Byju's. He has not collected a national honour and no academic award is attached to his name.[1][8][9]
Philanthropy
The clearest philanthropic act on the record is the village school. The school at Vaidpura in Greater Noida was upgraded into a learning hub with a digital library of over 1,000 books, 30 laptops, free internet and air conditioning, open twelve hours a day, for rural students preparing for the civil services examination and medical entrance tests. The reporting on it notes that he lost his own family home as a child, which is the reason the story reads the way it does.[4]
Free and low priced content is the company's version of the same idea at scale. The YouTube channel has always been free, the app's courses have been priced at a fraction of the market rate, and he has argued repeatedly that the point of the business is the 80 per cent of students who cannot afford premium coaching. His September 2024 public position, made on Teachers' Day, was that the government should reduce the goods and services tax on education and that edtech companies should operate as non profit organisations.[1][2]
He also supports individual students in ways that are reported as news rather than as charity. In August 2026, an Assam teenager named Janmoni Konwar, who had been living in a flood shelter and whose family home was submerged, won a karate gold medal in Delhi after he helped her reach the championship; the reporting described her winning all three bouts, including a 10-2 final.[16]
There is no named foundation, no published giving pledge and no annual philanthropy report attached to him. The giving on the record is a school, a free channel and a set of public stands on fees and taxes, and this page does not inflate it into an institution that does not exist.[4][16]
Controversies and criticism
The loudest dispute in the company's history began in March 2023, when several teachers who had left PhysicsWallah started an independent YouTube channel called Sankalp Bharat and explained their departures on camera. Their allegation was that the company's atmosphere had changed and that students at its Kota centre were not receiving teaching that justified the fees charged. A current teacher, Pankaj Sijariya, responded in a video by alleging that three former teachers, Tarun Kumar, Manish Dubey and Sarvesh Dixit, had each been offered 5 crore rupees to resign and join a rival platform called Adda247, and the three said in their own video that they had been accused of taking bribes. The company declined to comment on the validity of the claims and told Business Today that the episode was a distraction.[1][3]
The poaching war that preceded this episode has a founder who still talks about it as an existential moment. In February 2021 a rival offered 75 crore rupees for a 10 per cent stake, was refused, and then went after his teachers. The video he published in reply, saying that for every one they took he would produce a hundred Alakh Pandeys, was read as defiance; it is also a statement that the company's main asset walked out of the door every evening.[2]
The criticism that follows the company most persistently is about the model itself. Rivals have pointed out that everything is built around one person, with one founder as the face of every vertical, and one former competitor told Business Today that this was a fatal flaw because the brand and the teacher are the same thing. The company has also been through layoffs, cutting about 150 employees in November 2023 on performance grounds, less than 1 per cent of its workforce, after reporting that it had hired heavily through the pandemic.[1][3]
He has been a critic of the examination system rather than a target of it. In June 2024 he filed a public interest litigation over the NEET undergraduate results and publicly questioned the testing agency on the grace marks row, which made him a voice for aggrieved students across the country. The line he draws is deliberate: he says he is part of the system and cannot complain about it, while using his platform to push for changes in it.[7][15]
The most recent matter is a legal one about his own name. In August 2026 the Delhi High Court said it might protect him from the commercial misuse of his personality and asked him to categorise the alleged violations before any order was passed, indicating that it would not issue a blanket ban on all content. For a founder whose face is the brand, the right to control the use of that face is now a business asset with a court schedule attached.[14]
The teachers' dispute and the public stands
The dispute with departing teachers is worth setting out separately, because it is the clearest test the company has faced of whether it is a platform or a personality. When the teachers left in 2023 and took their grievance to YouTube, the argument moved to the same medium that had built the company, and PhysicsWallah's advantage there was overwhelming: 13 lakh monthly active users at that point against a handful of dissident channels.[1][3]
The company's response was to deny the substance quietly and to answer the accusation of poaching with a counter accusation of poaching. Its statement to Business Today called the allegations a distraction, which is a non answer, and no independent enquiry into the claims has been published since. Neither side produced documentary evidence in public. What the episode established is that the company's teachers are its product and that its competitors treat them as a recruitment target.[1][3]
Pandey's public positions on policy are more clearly documented than his response to the dispute. On Teachers' Day in September 2024 he said the government should reduce the goods and services tax on education and that edtech companies should be run as non profit organisations, which is an unusual thing for the chief executive of a company about to list to say out loud. In the same period he was arguing publicly about the fairness of national entrance examinations, having filed a petition over the NEET results.[15][1]
The subsequent expansion into offline centres and into university partnerships has done some of the work of answering the model criticism. A company that owns 303 classrooms and signs five year agreements with universities is less dependent on one teacher's YouTube channel than a company that only sells to it, and the southern push announced in 2026 with the Mohan Babu University partnership covering nearly 18,000 students is the largest such move so far.[7][13]
The distinction he draws between himself and the company is the one worth keeping in view. He has said he is part of the education system and cannot complain about it, that he wants a presence wherever there is an internet connection and a student, and that the thing he cannot do is run a business that loses money. Those three sentences, taken together, describe a founder who has stopped arguing with the market and started competing in it.[3][7]
